On August 16th, Tesla launched a new second-generation home charger called the Tesla Universal Wall Connector. It has a unique feature that allows it to charge any electric vehicle sold in North America without requiring an additional adapter. Customers can order the charger today, but shipments will not begin until October.
This is because the Universal Wall Connector uses an AC version of the Supercharger Magic Dock, which allows the charger to release a built-in J1772 adapter when needed by the user, thus enabling charging for electric vehicles using the new North American Charging Standard (NACS) or J1772 interface.
The Universal Wall Connector is now available for purchase at Best Buy and Tesla stores for $595. This price is reasonable and in line with Tesla’s other home charging products. Currently, the Tesla Wall Connector is priced at $475, and the Tesla J1772 Wall Connector is priced at $550.
The specifications of the Universal Wall Connector are as follows:
- Can add up to 44 miles of range per hour, with an output power of 11.5 kW/48A
- Integrated J1772 adapter can charge any electric vehicle
- Automatic cord holder can open the Tesla charging port
- Monitor and manage your charging schedule and usage through the Tesla app
- Wi-Fi connection allows for OTA updates, remote diagnostics, and access control
- Suitable for indoor and outdoor use
- Current can be adjusted based on installation location
- Can share power with up to 6 Wall Connectors
- 24-foot cable length
- 4-year warranty (for residential use)
In addition to the release of the Universal Wall Connector, Tesla also announced today that it will soon be sending an update to its mobile application. This update will bring more features and activate some functionalities, including scheduling charging times and viewing past charging events data.
