Q2 2023 Global EV Report: Tesla (20%) Leads, BYD (15%) Close Behind

On August 31st, according to the global passenger vehicle tracking report published by market research firm Counterpoint Research, pure electric vehicles (BEVs) achieved impressive results in Western Europe, North America, and emerging markets in Asia in the second quarter of 2023, with sales increasing by 50% compared to the same period last year.

BEV car sales in China also rebounded, with a year-on-year increase of 37%, which was lower than the global growth rate. Chinese brand car companies still dominate, accounting for 56% of global sales, and compact electric vehicles remain the main type sold in China.

Chinese research analyst Archie Zhang pointed out that “in the second quarter, three of the top five global manufacturers of pure electric passenger vehicles, BYD Auto, GAC Group, and Geely Holdings, sold primarily in the Chinese market, occupying three seats.”

Here is the situation of major car brands’ pure electric vehicles in 2023:

  • Tesla’s market share is 20%, an increase of 4 percentage points compared to the same period last year, with sales increasing by 83% year-on-year;
  • BYD’s market share is 15%, an increase of 3 percentage points compared to the same period last year, with sales increasing by 96% year-on-year;
  • Volkswagen’s market share is 7%, a decrease of 1 percentage point compared to the same period last year, with sales increasing by 48% year-on-year;
  • Geely’s market share is 6%, an increase of 2 percentage points compared to the same period last year, with sales increasing by 111% year-on-year;
  • GAC Group’s market share is 6%, an increase of 2 percentage points compared to the same period last year, with sales increasing by 137% year-on-year;
  • Hyundai’s market share is 5%, a decrease of 1 percentage point compared to the same period last year, with sales increasing by 24% year-on-year.
