On June 29th, according to the Brazilian “Global News”, Tyler Li, the president of BYD Brazil, stated that the company is about to open a new factory in Brazil and confirmed that it will start selling the entry-level electric vehicle model Dolphin in Brazil, with a listed price of 149,800 reais.
Tyler Li stated that BYD is currently in talks with the Brazilian federal government and the government of Bahia state to establish a factory in the region, with an annual production capacity of approximately 150,000 vehicles.
Earlier reports indicated that BYD is interested in acquiring the Ford factory located in Bahia state in northeastern Brazil, which has an annual production capacity of approximately 300,000 vehicles and has been shut down since 2021. The factory is still owned by Ford.
Last October, BYD signed a letter of intent with the government of Bahia state and plans to invest approximately 3 billion reais to establish an electric vehicle production base in an industrial park on the outskirts of the state capital, Salvador, creating 1,200 direct jobs in the region.
Tyler Li explained that in addition to producing lithium iron phosphate batteries, the new factory will also produce chassis for electric sedans, trucks, buses, and hybrid passenger vehicles. He also emphasized that there will be “no limits” to the investment in this factory.
BYD set up a factory in Campinas, Brazil in 2015, producing photovoltaic modules for electric bus chassis and solar panels. In 2020, BYD also established a factory in Manaus to produce lithium iron phosphate batteries.
