Tesla has performed exceptionally well in the Norwegian electric car market, setting a new monthly sales record in March and capturing nearly half of the market share, largely due to the success of its Model Y model.
According to data from the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV), Tesla sold approximately 5,639 Model Y vehicles in March, breaking the historical record of 5,315 Model 3s sold in March 2019. In total, Tesla sold 5,993 new cars in March, surpassing the previous monthly sales record of 5,822 cars sold in March 2019. It is worth noting that there are still a few days left in March that have not been counted.
In the first three months of 2023, Tesla leads the passenger car sales in Norway by a large margin, having sold 7,565 cars as of March 26th. Volkswagen ranks second, having sold 3,072 cars so far this year. Among all passenger cars, the Model Y is the best-selling model, with 6,911 cars sold as of March 26th.
BilNytt.no calculates that Tesla’s market share in Norway in March was approximately 46.4%. According to statistics from January to March 26th, Tesla’s market share in Norway was 34.1%, higher than the 12.2% in 2022.
Tesla’s significant sales growth in March was largely due to its price reduction. The US automaker lowered the price of the Model Y by approximately 120,000 Norwegian kroner, or about $14,000, which was well received by consumers.
Tesla has long been the leader in the Norwegian electric car market and has reached a new milestone this year.
