Tesla HW 4.0 has cameras with a wider horizontal field of view

Tesla delivered the first batch of models equipped with HW 4.0 earlier this month, and we are gradually learning more details about this new system.

Tesla hardware 4.0 has 12 camera interfaces, one of which is marked as a spare. Currently, all Tesla models are equipped with nine cameras, including three forward-facing cameras located below the windshield, two on the fenders, two on the B-pillars, one on the rear, and one for the interior camera.

The new cameras not only improve image quality and resolution but also increase the field of view, which is very helpful for situations such as unprotected turns. A Twitter user showed a comparison of images taken at the same location with his new Model S (equipped with hardware 4.0) and an old Model Y (equipped with hardware 3.0). The result showed that the new Model S can see more horizontal information, while the old Model Y can see more vertical information.

Tesla began quietly installing hardware 4.0 on some vehicles earlier this month and plans to promote it to more models in the future. With the synergy between hardware 4.0 and the server-side full self-driving function, Tesla’s autonomous driving level is expected to improve significantly.
