On June 22nd, according to the latest rumors, Tesla is preparing to acquire wireless charging company Wiferion, which is a company located in Freiburg, Germany that specializes in charging and power solutions. Wiferion claims to be a “leading supplier of automated wireless power systems” and since developing products in 2015, has provided wireless charging solutions to over 100 companies.
Last year, Wiferion entered the North American market through a global licensing agreement with WiTricity. WiTricity demonstrated its wireless charging technology last year using a Tesla car.
According to a report from Business Insider, the German commercial register shows that Wiferion is about to sell its business to Tesla International BV. The register states, “The shareholders intend to sell their shares in the company to Tesla International BV through a purchase agreement.” Tesla International BV is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tesla headquartered in the Netherlands. The publication also asked two Wiferion investors who confirmed that the deal is underway, but did not disclose which company is involved in the transaction.
This deal could be an important step for Tesla’s foray into wireless charging equipment. Earlier this year, at the shareholders’ meeting, Tesla seemed to quietly showcase a wireless charging device, with a Tesla parked on a wireless charging pad in a garage, suggesting that a wireless charging module is on the way.
We have noticed that Tesla has also advanced certain projects through company acquisitions in the past. In 2019, Tesla acquired Maxwell Technologies, but sold it again in 2021. The company also acquired Hibar Systems at the end of 2019 to help develop its own battery cells, which are produced at multiple manufacturing sites in California and Texas.
