Secretary of NHTSA: The naming of Tesla Autopilot lacks “common sense”

In an interview with Bloomberg News in Washington recently, Pete Buttigieg, the US Secretary of Transportation, said that Tesla’s use of the name “Autopilot” was unreasonable, which was worrying.

Buttigieg said: “If the manual clearly states that you must always put your hands on the steering wheel and keep your eyes on the road, then I will not call it ‘Autopilot’. I am not talking about the scope of NHTSA’s investigation, but from the perspective of common sense. I think this is a problem.”

It should be reminded that Tesla’s technology is still considered as L2 level driving assistance system, mainly because the driver must always monitor the behavior of the car, otherwise the system will stop working.

Last month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that Tesla would recall more than 360000 vehicles because its FSD Beta driver assistance increased the risk of accidents. As a result of this recall, the FSD function will be suspended for new users and subscribers who have not received software updates, and users who have activated the FSD Beta function will be able to continue to use it. In addition, NHTSA is investigating possible Autopilot defects and evaluating Tesla’s methods of tracking drivers to ensure their participation; At the same time, the Ministry of Justice is also investigating whether Tesla made a misleading statement about its driving assistance system.
