CATL will continue last year’s pricing strategy and industrialize sodium-ion batteries

During a recent institutional survey, CATL stated that the company’s overall pricing strategy has not changed this year. The company hopes to help its customers build product competitiveness and gain a larger market share through differentiated products and technologies. For example, promoting the industrialization of sodium-ion batteries with lower comprehensive costs, promoting chocolate battery swapping for RMB 100,000-200,000 (approximately US$15,000-30,000) based on the exchange rate, and making the vehicle product more competitive.

CATL said that the company’s cooperation project with Ford is currently in progress, and the cooperation method is based on commercial considerations, with the aim of providing customers with competitive products. The company hopes to provide customers with more competitive products and services through flexible and innovative business models.

CATL also stated that the supply chain of sodium-ion batteries will become more mature by 2023. This year, both sodium-ion batteries and M3P are expected to be industrialized, and the specific scale depends on the progress of customer projects. In addition, the company’s Jiangxi lithium resource project is progressing as planned and is expected to achieve mass production this year. At the same time, the company currently holds 100% equity of Snowy.

Insiders close to CATL revealed that the “lithium mine rebate” policy that CATL has been preparing for some time is steadily advancing. The agreement with related host factories has entered the practical stage, and it is expected to be reached by the end of March at the earliest. The core terms of the “lithium mine rebate” plan are that for the next three years, the price of lithium carbonate for some power batteries will be settled at RMB 200,000 (US$30,000)/ton. At the same time, car manufacturers that sign this agreement need to commit to purchasing about 80% of their batteries from CATL and pay a certain locking fee. It is reported that the “lithium mine rebate” program will be aimed at strategic customers such as LI Motors, NIO, Huawei, and Zeekr Motors.
