BYD surpasses LG to become the world’s second largest EV battery supplier

On May 9th, according to the latest report released by the South Korean market research firm SNE Research, BYD has surpassed LG Energy Solution and ranks second with a market share of 16.2%.

According to the report, CATL continues to hold the first position in the electric vehicle battery industry, supplying models such as Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, with a market share of 35%.

This means that in the global electric vehicle battery supplier rankings, China’s Ningde Times and BYD occupy the top two spots.

The report shows that the total consumption of electric vehicle batteries globally in the first quarter was 133.0 GWh, an increase of 38.6% from the same period last year, which was 95.9 GWh.

The report data is as follows:

  • CATL ****installed 46.6 GWh of batteries in the first quarter, an increase of 35.9% from the same period last year, which was 34.3 GWh.
  • BYD installed 21.5 GWh of power batteries in the first quarter, an increase of 115.5% from the same period last year, which was 10.0 GWh.
  • LG Energy Solution installed 19.3 GWh of power batteries from January to March, with a year-on-year increase of 37.5%. It ranks third in the world with a share of 14.5%, lower than 14.6% a year ago.
