Tesla’s all-electric pickup truck, the Cybertruck, is about to go into production, and details are emerging about its production version. Photos taken by attendees at the Investor Day event show some interesting details of the production test version of the Cybertruck, one of which is the vehicle’s five-seat configuration, which will reportedly be the version that eventually makes it to market.
After the investor day, early Tesla investor and electric car advocate Matthew Donegan-Ryan tweeted that the pre-production Cybertruck model shown at the investor day was about 5 percent smaller than the prototype, and that Tesla removes the center front seat, which the prototype had in a six-seat configuration. The early Tesla investor also noted that all Cybertruck models will only be offered in a five-seat configuration, information that allegedly came from a Tesla employee.
If this early Tesla investor’s information is accurate, it means that the Cybertruck is capable of carrying fewer people than competing offerings such as the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado, both of which offer six seats. As a result, I’m sure some Tesla enthusiasts and some Cybertruck reservation holders will be disappointed that the pickup’s sixth seat has been removed.
However, other EV advocates have suggested that the Cybertruck’s “missing” sixth seat may have something to do with the safety of the all-electric pickup. In the original Cybertruck prototype, the middle front seat faced the vehicle’s massive touchscreen, and optimizing the safety of the middle front seat could be tricky, and airbag placement alone could be challenging. Of course, eliminating the center front seat would also reduce the Cybertruck’s production costs, which would be beneficial to Tesla.

Donegan-Ryan also revealed some other information about the Cybertruck as follows:
- The CyberTruck has a hood that opens like the Model X and a front bumper/grille area that doesn’t open like the F-150 Lightning.
- There will be two versions of the CyberTruck: one with dual motors, and what I call a performance version (don’t know the official name), which should come with three motors.
- All CyberTruck models will have rear-wheel steering.
- The CyberTruck will have Tesla’s largest ever center display at 18.5 inches (17 inches for the Model S and X), no instrument screen, no head-up display, and a second row of control screens similar to the Model S / X.
- CyberTruck steering wheel is rounded on the left and right sides and flat on the top/bottom.
- Air suspension is standard.
- CyberTryck’s doors do not open automatically like the Model X. There are release buttons on the B and C pillars to open the doors.
