On June 14th, it was reported by Digital Times that Samsung SDI, responsible for battery and electronic material manufacturing under Samsung, confirmed that they and General Motors will establish a new joint venture battery factory in New Carlisle, Indiana, USA.
Samsung SDI announced that the joint venture factory covers an area of approximately 2.65 million square meters, equivalent to the size of 390 standard football fields. After the production facilities are completed, the two parties expect to create about 1,700 job positions.
Earlier in April, Samsung SDI announced a partnership with General Motors to invest over $3 billion in establishing a battery factory with an annual capacity of over 30GWh, aiming to achieve mass production by 2026. Mary Barra, Chairman and CEO of General Motors, stated that the jointly developed batteries will help General Motors increase its annual production of electric vehicles in North America to over one million.
Samsung SDI has previously announced a joint venture battery factory with Stellantis, the world’s fourth-largest automaker, in the United States. The factory is expected to start production in 2025 with an annual capacity of 23GWh. It is worth noting that this factory is also located in Indiana.
