On April 27th, MG launched its second electric vehicle, the MG Comet EV, in India, starting at INR 798,000 (approximately $10,380), making it currently the cheapest electric car in India. The MG Comet EV is positioned as a city car with a two-door, four-seat design and can travel up to 230 km (143 miles) on a single charge. For comparison, the Tata Tiago electric vehicle has a range of 250-315 km (155-196 miles) and starts at INR 849,000 (approximately $11,000), while the Wuling Air EV four-seater version is currently priced at CNY 76,800 (approximately $11,815) in China.
According to public information, “Comet” comes from the iconic British aircraft that participated in the 1934 England to Australia MacRobertson Air Race, and MG’s previous Hector and Gloster were also named after British aircraft from World War II. MG expects that 25%-30% of its sales in India will come from electric vehicles by 2023.
From the appearance, this car has a close relationship with the sister brand Wuling Air EV. Its length, width and height are 2974/1505/1640mm respectively, with a wheelbase of 2010mm, which is exactly the same size as the four-seater version of Air EV.
This car model is equipped with a 14.3kWh battery, with a maximum power of 42PS (about 31kW) and a maximum torque of 110N·m, providing a range of 230km (143miles). The Air EV four-seater version has a battery capacity of 28.4kWh, a maximum power of 50kW, a maximum torque of 140N·m, and a CLTC range of 300km (186miles).
Comet EV does not support fast charging. The estimated charging time for 3.3kW charging is 7 hours (0-100%). If charged only up to 80%, it will take 5.5 hours.
It is reported that the MG Comet EV is also equipped with i-SMART and internal internet functions, making it far ahead in this segment of the market.
