Google announces support for multiple in-car displays on Android Automotive OS 14, with the YouTube app coming soon

On May 11th, Google announced that its Android Automotive OS system will be used in more cars and will be upgraded through Android 14. It will support multiple displays in cars and will introduce a YouTube application.

At Google I/O 2023, Google announced that the official YouTube application will be available on Android Automotive OS in the “coming weeks”. It will be available for Polestar and Volvo cars and all other car manufacturers.

This is part of a wider push for video applications on Android Automotive OS. Google also announced today that it will make it easier to port tablet applications to Android Automotive and will further promote web browsers and game applications, including “GameSnacks” from Android Auto, which will soon be available on Automotive.

Aside from video applications, Google has announced that Android Automotive OS 14 will bring new and convenient features.

Multi-display support will allow Android Automotive OS to work across displays in front of passengers, even on rear seat displays as well as instrument panel and central infotainment screens. Google demonstrated the ability to mirror video content on two rear seat displays and the central instrument panel, or to charge and watch movies simultaneously during a family trip. It also supports passengers helping drivers navigate and perform other functions from displays in front of them.

Google also added that with more brands such as Chevrolet, Renault, Volvo, Polestar, and Honda adopting the platform and launching supported cars, the number of cars equipped with “built-in Google” Android Automotive OS is expected to double this year.

Smart replies from Android Auto will also be available in Android Automotive in the “coming months,” and Android Automotive’s Waze will also support displaying electric vehicle charging stations.
