Electric vehicle batteries last longer than expected, which is good for the used market

According to new data from Recurrent Auto, the second-life of electric vehicle batteries far exceeds the expectations of critics and consumers. This data shatters many misconceptions and concerns about electric vehicle batteries.

Recurrent Auto conducted a survey of over 15,000 electric vehicle owners, collecting the most detailed battery health data ever, and the results show that the lifespan of electric car batteries is much longer than expected. In this massive group of car owners, only 1.5% of people replaced their battery when it was not recalled or out of warranty, most of which were older Nissan Leafs lacking a liquid-cooled battery temperature control system.

Recurrent Auto’s survey covered 13 models, including Tesla Model S, Model 3, and Model Y; Chevrolet Bolt, Bolt EUV, and Volt; Hyundai Kona; BMW i3; Audi e-tron; Nissan Leaf; Hyundai Kona and IONIQ 5; and Ford Mustang Mach-E.

In addition to a few owners who were forced to replace their batteries, Recurrent Auto also found that battery degradation is not linear. From each survey group, although the range of electric vehicle mileage peaks between 10,000 and 20,000 miles, as the range approaches 100,000 miles, the rate of battery degradation quickly accelerates and then stabilizes.

Recurrent Auto attributes this phenomenon to two main technologies: battery management system and battery temperature control system, both of which greatly improve the battery life. These systems not only allow car owners to limit the amount of charge to the battery, reducing damage to the battery health, but also ensure that the battery always operates at a safe and “healthy” temperature.

Perhaps the most favorable target for Recurrent Auto’s data is the second-hand electric vehicle market, which many people consider a risky market. However, Recurrent Auto’s data shows that people do not have to worry about the battery health of the used electric car they want to buy.
