China EV sales rose 34.8% YoY in March, while battery capacity increased 29.7% YoY

On April 11th, it was reported by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers that in March, China’s production and sales of passenger vehicles reached 2.149 million and 2.017 million respectively, increasing by 25.3% and 22% on a month-on-month basis, and by 14.3% and 8.2% on a year-on-year basis.

Among them, the sales of traditional fuel passenger vehicles in China were 1.169 million, a decrease of 128,000 from the same period last year, an increase of 21.3% month-on-month, and a decrease of 9.9% year-on-year.

From January to March, the production and sales of passenger vehicles were 5.262 million and 5.138 million respectively, a year-on-year decrease of 4.3% and 7.3%.

From January to March, the total sales of the top ten automobile enterprise groups were 5.057 million vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 7.8%, accounting for 83.2% of the total automobile sales, which was 1 percentage point lower than the same period last year.

Among the top ten automobile enterprise groups in terms of sales, compared with the same period last year, four enterprise groups showed significant growth in sales, with double-digit growth rates, namely BYD, Chery, Tesla, and BAIC. Other enterprises showed different degrees of decline.

In March, the production and sales of new energy vehicles reached 674,000 and 653,000 respectively, a year-on-year increase of 44.8% and 34.8%, with a market share of 26.6%.

From January to March, the production and sales of new energy vehicles reached 1.65 million and 1.586 million respectively, a year-on-year increase of 27.7% and 26.2%, with a market share of 26.1%.

In March, the installed capacity of power batteries in China was 27.8 GWh, a year-on-year increase of 29.7% and a month-on-month increase of 26.7%.

Among them, the installed capacity of ternary batteries was 8.7 GWh, accounting for 31.4% of the total installed capacity, with a year-on-year increase of 6.3% and a month-on-month increase of 29.8%;

The installed capacity of lithium iron phosphate batteries was 19.0 GWh, accounting for 68.5% of the total installed capacity, with a year-on-year increase of 44.4% and a month-on-month increase of 25.3%.

From January to March, the cumulative installed capacity of power batteries reached 65.9 GWh, a year-on-year increase of 28.4%.

China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) stated that the highlights of the auto market in the previous year have continued into the first quarter of this year. New energy vehicles have maintained a fast growth rate on a high base from the same period last year, with a market share of 26.1%. Automobile exports have remained at a high level, with a year-on-year growth of 70.6% in the first quarter. The market share of Chinese brands has steadily increased.
