Toyota’s first electric sedan, the bZ3, starts delivery using BYD’s blade battery

On April 25th, it was announced that the bZ3 from FAW Toyota has officially started delivery. The new car has three versions with the following suggested retail prices:

  • Elite Pro version: 169800RMB (approximately 24518 USD)
  • Long-range Pro version: 189800RMB (approximately 27406 USD)
  • Long-range Premium version: 199800RMB (approximately 28850 USD)

As Toyota’s new pure electric midsize sedan, the bZ3 is built on the e-TNGA platform and is equipped with blade batteries and electric motors provided by BYD. The CLTC comprehensive range is 517km (320 miles) and 616km (383 miles) respectively.

It is reported that the Toyota bZ3 is exclusively manufactured by FAW Toyota, and its three electric technologies were jointly developed by Toyota and BYD (note: the battery is from CATL and the electric motor is from BYD Power).

The dimensions of this new car are 4725/1835/1475mm in length, width, and height respectively, with a wheelbase of 2880mm and equipped with 18-inch wheels. The drag coefficient is only 0.218. The chassis adopts the front MacPherson and rear E-type multi-link structure, which is at the mainstream level of the same class. It uses rear-wheel drive, with an electric consumption of 11kWh / 100km (62 miles).

The appearance design of bZ3 is similar to bZ4X, with a closed front face design and a through-type LED daytime running light highlighting its new energy attributes. The front headlight group is a matrix-style full LED light source, with a sharp shape. The side lines of the car are smooth, and the suspended roof and hidden door handles add sportiness. In addition, its B and C pillars adopt a hidden design.

This car uses a 12.8-inch vertical central control screen, equipped with a vehicle system developed by BYD Toyota Electric Vehicle Technology Co., Ltd. (BTET), adopting a new UI design. The larger vertical screen is mainly used for navigation maps, with card-style quick function entry and air conditioning area set below. It also integrates various applications and voice assistants, supporting 120 seconds of continuous conversation.

In terms of power, the bZ3 uses lithium iron phosphate blade batteries provided by BYD Fudi Power and a rear-mounted single motor. There are two specifications of motors available, 135kW and 180kW, with a peak torque of 303N·m and a fastest 0-50km/h acceleration time of 3.2 seconds.

There are two battery capacities available, 49.92kWh and 65.28kWh, corresponding to CLTC ranges of 517km (320miles) and 616km (383miles), respectively. In addition, it also supports fast charging, requiring 27 minutes from 30-80% at room temperature, and 47 minutes under -10℃ conditions.
